About Ms. Lori
I believe that teachers are the ultimate influencers in a child’s life. That is why I wrote this biography. You deserve to know who is talking to your child and what motivates them. I am open to any of your questions not covered here. My lessons should be viewed by the parent, not only so that they know what I am teaching their child, but also so that they can learn valuable skills to use when I am no longer there. Hopefully, we can pass on this knowledge to the community around us.
I use literature to branch into geography, history, and science. Please see my demonstrations page for how I integrate technology into language arts using Google Slides and AI.
My Homeschooling Experience:
My daughter was extremely distracted in any classroom setting. I had to tailor her learning around her need to move and use her hands. I let her express her ideas with art. She is now in her twenties and although she has earned several degrees in psychology and human services, she sells paintings on the side. She used all those years at home to improve her art skills. Although, she really did not like math, she works in the accounting department for a large building supply company. Thankfully, she received specific training and realized that she is excellent at solving real world problems.
My second child was overfocused. He could read Moby Dick in a few weeks but is bored by lectures. He loses his attention quickly if someone is not organized and consistent with pertinent information. He loves to work with his hands, so we started a First Robotics team called XBots. This award-winning team is still run today out of the Boys and Girls Club in the city of Whittier. I am incredibly grateful that when Covid-19 hit our world, my son was prepared to do an essential job. Through his early training in XBots and an internship with Willick Engineering, he was hired by SpaceX and moved to Texas to work at only 19 years old.
During my years homeschooling two high school students, we also started a Speech and Debate team called SOPHOS for families in our area. All three of my children have won top prizes for Speech and Debate for state championships in both private and public organizations. I have a minor in Speech Communication and a passion for helping students become excellent communicators both in speaking and writing. I have been a speech and debate coach for over seven years now and feel I have a gift for helping students express themselves professionally.
My third child has a love of writing that I think is just a gift from God. I did not really push him do a lot of writing. An opportunity presented itself during a city council meeting that we attended in order to plead for some open land to be saved from development in our neighborhood. You can still search the very first article that he was asked to write called Coyote Hills or Concrete Hills when he was twelve years old for the Fullerton Observer newspaper. I don’t believe he would have had that passion if I demanded too many grammar sheets and overly criticized his writing at an early age. He too enjoys speech and debate and has competed at the state level.
I have been teaching, coaching, and tutoring students for over twenty years. I have wisdom about a wide range of learning styles that only comes from experience. I love to help empower parents to homeschool their own children. I am motivated to change the educational system to put the power of learning back into the hands of parents and the teachers that they choose to influence their children. When we teach, we influence.
